A routing gateway is an intermediate destination for agents, used to reduce unrealistic local spreading on long trips. The use of gateways is valid only if route cost perturbation is used.

If gateways are used, it splits the routing decision tree into two levels:

• first, an agent decides which gateway it will use to get to its ultimate destination. Total costs to alternative gateways will be perturbed.
• second, an agent will make local routing choices to the next gateway (or ultimate destination), introducing perturbation at each decision point
